Objectives: 　　

At the end of the session, most students will know what topic sentence is and how to write a proper topic sentence of a paragraph. The teaching and learning context is as follows:　　

1. The paragraph from 3a, Unit 4 (Year 8 BookⅠ,Go for it)and other paragraphs.　　

2. Proper and different tasks which are designed to help students practice writing topic sentences. 　　

Cultures awareness:　　

    A typical English paragraph includes three parts: the topic sentence, the developing sentences and the concluding sentence, which is different from writing in Chinese.  　　

Learning& teaching focus: 　　

1. Understanding what topic sentence is: Every paragraph needs a topic sentence, which is usually the first sentence of the paragraph. It gives the readers an idea of what the  paragraph is going to be about..　　

2. Learning to write a good topic sentence of a paragraph. There’re four tips on writing topic sentences: a. Topic sentence is usually the first sentence of a paragraph. b. Topic sentence should tell the main idea of a paragraph. c. Topic sentence should not be too broad or too narrow. d. Topic sentence should be simple and clear.  　　

Anticipated difficulties:　　

    It may be difficult for students to know whether the topic sentence they write is the proper one or not. 　　

Solutions:　　

1. Lead students to choose the proper topic sentence for different paragraphs and explain why it is a good topic sentence.　　

2. Offer students sufficient and related materials to practice writing topic sentences. 　　

  3.  Compare the topic sentences students write.

Step 1 Greeting and leading-in.　　

Tell students I’m going to teach them something very important when they write English articles. 　　

This step helps students know the new teacher better and get mentally prepared for learning.　　

Presentation& Practice

Step 2 Get to know topic sentence.　　

Present a picture and a paragraph about the picture. Ask students some questions about each sentence and the paragraph. Helps them understand what topic sentence is. 　　

Step 3 Learn to write topic sentences. 　　

Use 6 examples to tell students a topic sentence should tell the main idea of a paragraph, should not be too broad or too narrow, should be simple and clear. At the same time, let students choose the  proper word to complete the topic sentence and then choose the best topic sentence for the paragraph. Use the last example to lead students to write different topic sentences for the paragraph. 　　

This activity helps students know the topic is usually the first sentence and it tells the main idea of the paragraph. 　　

Students perceive what a good topic sentence should be like by 　　

comparing different sentences. Always encourage students to tell why the sentence they choose is suitable to be the topic sentence of the paragraph. By doing this, students with lower level may understand gradually and follow the others as well.

Step 4 Write topic sentences.　　

Offer students two paragraphs without the topic sentence and let them write topic sentences for the paragraphs. When students write, choose some typical ones from them and put these sentences on the blackboard. Then make comments on the sentences with the class. 　　

Step 5 Competition 　　

Divide the class into four groups and tell them they’re going to have a competition. Let them write a good topic sentence for the paragraph in 3a, page 23. First, everyone should write a topic sentence. Then group members discuss and choose the best topic sentence of the group. Write it on the card and put it on the blackboard. At last, the class discuss which topic sentence is the best one. 　　

Making comments on the topic sentences from students helps students know how to write a good topic sentence further and learn from each other. 　　

The form of the competition makes the practice more interesting and students learn to cooperate with the other group members in the competition. It’s also an assessment, which helps the teacher know if students can write a good topic sentence for the paragraph.

Announce the winner of the competition and lead students to make a summary:　　

Announcing the winner of the competition may build students’ confidence in learning English and encourage the others to do better next time. Summary makes students have deep impression on which they’ve learned in this class

Homework offers students more practice of writing the topic sentence, which helps them consolidate what they’ve learned in this writing class.
